Oral History Interviews

Interview Nominations

The FHS has received many recommendations and suggestions for oral history interviews. Some are individuals such as: people who have lived in the community since the 1940’s and 1950’s; people involved in the renovation and condominium conversion; families who have lived in Fairlington over several generations; people who have worked on the property and grounds; and people who have led condominium and civic associations, community activity groups, and other organizations.

Others recommendations are groups of people such as: ‘original owners,’ or people who purchased their homes during the condominium conversion and have lived in Fairlington since; people who grew up in Fairlington; neighbors in particular courts or other areas.

We hope to interview them all and more.

The Oral History Program

The VOF Committee began the oral history program in February 2005, with a training session for volunteers. Arlington County Public Library staff, local, and oral historians Judy Knudsen and Sara Collins prepared a dozen people interested in conducting oral history interviews.

Volunteers then organized questions and equipment, and organized themselves into interview teams of two. The first oral history interview was completed in July 2005, and the second is scheduled for the fall. Training for new volunteers is anticipated for early spring 2005.
